Communicative Temptations
It's very natural to want to avoid seeing your child struggle or become frustrated. That's why we often anticipate what the child wants before they tell us! However, a little challenge (at the appropriate times and the appropriate level) can be motivating. Give your children a reason to communicate. They will learn the power of communication and that they can be more specific in their messages by using more language.
By waiting and listening for your child's messages, we learn not to anticipate their needs. "Playing dumb" can get you far here! Pretend you don't know what they want, "forget" to give them a cookie and start eating one yourself, "forget" to put one of their socks on, etc. Feel free to be silly and use gentle humor -- it really helps the interaction and kids learn best when they enjoy the activity and feel at ease .
